I’m writing a medical memoir.
And I started thinking…
How will I promote it?
I’m not sure you can target Facebook or social media ads to people with a medical condition.
(This doesn’t mean you can’t use social media to promote a medically-related book — TikTok would be great!).
Here are seven ideas I came up with to promote your medical or health-related memoir:
1. Use social media: Share excerpts, behind-the-scenes content, and teasers on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter to generate buzz and build an audience.
Start sharing while writing your book to build up an audience — publishers want to see that you have a platform.
2. Pitch podcasts and health blogs: Contact relevant health and wellness blogs, websites, and podcasts to pitch interviews or guest posts about your book.
3. Partner with medical professionals: Reach out to medical professionals and organizations in your field to see if they can promote your book to their networks.
Don’t forget to gift your doctor a copy of your book, and ask him or her if they know of any associations, organizations, or resources that might be helpful.
Sneaky tip: Leave a copy in the waiting room each time you visit!
4. Get media coverage and book reviews: Reach out to book reviewers, journalists, and media outlets to pitch your book and secure reviews and coverage.
Pro tip: Check out The National Publicity Summit to pitch national media producers and get on TV.
5. Do book signings and speaking engagements: Plan book signings and speaking engagements at bookstores, libraries, and medical conferences to connect with potential readers in person.
6. Host a Goodreads giveaway: Host a Goodreads giveaway to build excitement and generate reviews.
7. Don’t forget networking and word-of-mouth: Connect with other authors, publishers, and booksellers and tell them about your book. Ask for their help in promoting it to their networks.
I hope these ideas help!
Let me know if you’ve found any other tips that work.
While we’re at it, here are five medical memoirs I recently read and loved:
