ContactAnyCelebrity.com Interview on CNN

A few years ago CNN interviewed me about starting Contact Any Celebrity.

It was a full-circle moment because I had interned in CNN’s public relations department during my junior year of college.

This had nothing to do with getting me on!

What did?

Tips I had learned at the National Publicity Summit.

Here’s the interview if you’d like to see it.

CNN: So, who is your favorite celebrity? Is it Britney Spears? Maybe it’s Oprah. Well have you ever thought about contacting them? Every weekend here on Pipeline we like to bring you something different and interesting from the world of entertainment. So today, we have with us an entrepreneur, whose passion for collecting autographs of the rich and famous led him to create a database of celebrity contacts.

Now Jordan McAuley has a book titled the Celebrity Black Book and a Web site with 55,000 of who’s who in entertainment. So if you’re like me, you’re curious about his little black book.

Jordan is here with us now to tell us more. Jordan, thank you so much for joining us today on CNN Pipeline.

Jordan: Thank you for having me.

CNN: Jordan I want to say not only a little black book because I have it right here and it’s more like a really really big black book! It’s gigantic. How many names do you have in this thing?

The Celebrity Black Book on CNN
Jordan McAuley’s The Celebrity Black Book on CNN

Jordan: There are over 55,000 names in the book, everybody from actors to athletes, musicians, politicians, even reality TV stars. We have pretty much everybody in the book.

CNN: I know, I’ve been thumbing through it and it’s amazing, I mean just the range. You know, I’m curious about your background. How did this all get started. I know that you said that you like to collect autographs.

Jordan: Right. Well I used to collect autographs when I was about 13 just as a hobby, something to do. I’ve always loved celebrities and loved the movies. When I was in high school I started compiling the addresses that were working into what I called a celebrity address list, and I started selling that by mail order just to make some extra money. And by the time I got to college around 1996 — I went to film school — I started creating my Web site Contact Any Celebrity which now is the online database where 55,000 celebrities are inside with their agents and managers and publicists. Any way you’d want to contact a celebrity is in that database.

CNN: And you were saying that you started this as a way to make money. Did it make you rich? Were you making a lot of money?

Jordan: Not in the beginning. In the beginning like any entrepreneur, I think I had $15 and I bought a Web site creation package and I sort of just learned along the way. And now it does make a lot of money.

CNN: Excellent. Well lets talk about the book now. Was it difficult for you to compile all of these contacts, and who was difficult to get?

Jordan: Well I’ve learned through trial and error over the years. Like I said I went to film school so that helped a little bit with learning how to deal with agents and managers. We get their client lists every week. One of the hardest people to find — although we have pretty much everyone in the book and in the database — for some reason Yoko Ono has been really difficult to find. She’s really mysterious, we don’t know where she is.

CNN: I think I know that she lives across the street from Central Park. I didn’t say that.

Jordan: Right. We try not to provide home addresses, that’s one thing I want to be really clear about. Everything is an agent, a manager, a publicists, like I said a production company, maybe a personal assistant, sometimes the celebrity’s personal PO box where they would rather get their fan mail, but we don’t provide any kind of personal home addresses.

CNN: Well that’s really interesting. Have you ever had a celebrity come after you and say hey, you need to remove me from your book I’m not happy about this.

Jordan: I’ve actually never had anybody in the ten years I’ve been doing this want to be removed. We have a lot of celebrities will contact us and say you know maybe change my information I’m with a new management company. Like I said we have a lot of managers and agents that send us their client lists every week. So we find that people really do want to be included.

CNN: They do. OK. I wanted to ask you this because people become really celebrity obsessed. Do people ever in turn begin stalking you about their celebrity?

Jordan: I don’t get stalked about the celebrity. We do get some crazy fan mail. People sometimes think that our address is the address they should be sending their mail to instead of finding out the celebrity’s correct address. So we do sometimes read some crazy letters.

CNN: Like what? You have to tell us. You gotta fill us in here.

Jordan McAuley's Contact Any Celebrity on CNN
Jordan McAuley’s Contact Any Celebrity on CNN

Jordan: There was one man that wanted to have the bottom of his pool tiled to look like Angelina Jolie so he could I guess float on top of it and look down on her.

CNN: Oh, you’re kidding me!

Jordan: No. There was another man who wanted to contact Daryl Hannah from Splash because he wanted to have a mermaid’s tail surgically implanted on his legs so he could be a mermaid.

CNN: Wait! What did you just say? He wanted Daryl Hannah’s mermaid tail surgically implanted on his legs?

Jordan: Right. He wanted to contact Daryl Hannah to get her mermaid tail. I guess he thinks she owns it from Splash and wanted to have it surgically implanted on his feet. At least that’s what he told us, I’m not sure.

CNN: Now what do you do in a situation like that? What did you say to him?

Jordan: We usually just refer him back to our Web site and say you know you can find her contact information there. But is is fun to read the letters, like I said there are a lot of crazy requests that we get.

CNN: And I understand as well that a lot of celebrities have taken part in charity. Is that thanks to you?

Jordan: It’s thanks to the information in our database. We list the charitable causes that all of the celebrities contribute to whether it be cancer or AIDS. That’s something that I like doing the most. We have a lot of nonprofits and a lot of charities that use our service. What they’ll do is send off letters requesting autographed and celebrity memorabilia, and then they’ll hold a celebrity autograph auction whether it’s live or silent or sometimes on online services like eBay. And what they’ll do is they’ll raise thousands of dollars for their organization and it cost them nothing more than some postage and some volunteers to send the letters out.

CNN: Jordan I understand that you’ve also been contacted by news organizations, maybe even CNN in order to get in contact with somebody else.

Jordan: Right. Larry King Live contacted us right after the tsunami to contact Petra Nemcova, the supermodel that was injured in the tsunami. They said that they couldn’t find her information anywhere. We were able to get her agent and a few days later, actually I think it was only two days later, she was on Larry King Live. So I like to think we had something to do with that.

CNN: Jordan on a more personal note, how many autographs do you think you have?

Jordan: Well I kind of stopped collecting autographs when I was younger. At the time I had several hundred. Now I prefer working with like I said nonprofits, small businesses, fans, authors and writers and helping them contact celebrities whether just to send a fan letter or to get a speaker at an agent, to raise money for their charity, to get a testimonial to put on the cover of their book. Those are the things I focus on now.

CNN: If you would like to find out how you or your organization can contact a celebrity, you can always log on to Jordan’s Web site. That’s www.ContactAnyCelebrity.com or you can always go the hard copy route and buy the Celebrity Black Book.

Mike Esterman: Insider Interview

Friday, March 9th, 2012

Celebrity Leverage by Jordan McAuleyMike Esterman of Esterman Entertainment is a Contact Any Celebrity Member and celebrity personal appearance agent who has books celebrities for private parties and events.

He’s already been featured on The Today Show, E! Entertainment Television and CNN’s Showbiz Tonight as a guest expert, but we sat down to talk with Esterman about how small businesses can hire celebrities to help supercharge their marketing and publicity efforts.

What does a celebrity personal appearance agent do exactly?

While celebrities may have more than one agent (theatrical, speaking, voice over, etc.), I’m a non-exclusive conduit who gets them booked at private parties, special events, club appearances, store and restaurant openings, etc. The only events I myself do not book celebrities for are fundraisers or charity events.

Why should a small business go through a personal appearance agent like yourself as opposed to the celebrity’s theatrical agent?

One reason is because I actually answer the phone and will give you a quick answer. Sometimes you can’t get the celebrity’s theatrical agent on the phone. And if you do get them on the phone, in order to book the celebrity for an event they want to know all about your personal business: what your books look like, how your business operates, your background, etc. You can actually speak to me with one phone call and I don’t ask as many questions.

How far ahead should a business begin planning to book a celebrity?

I have people calling me today needing a celebrity for tonight up until a few weeks or a few months from now.

What is the expense range a small business should expect to pay to book a celebrity?

The price can range anywhere from $500 for a Playboy model or a reality TV star to $1.7 million for a private Justin Timberlake concert I was just asked about. It’s a pretty wide range.

For small businesses that may not have a big budget, what kinds of celebrities can they get?

Playboy models and reality TV stars are very affordable. Now there’s a difference between a Playboy model and a Playboy Playmate. You can get a model for about $500. A Playmate is about $1000. You can get reality stars, kids from MTV shows like The Real World and The Hills for about $1000.

What are some tips for saving money when booking a celebrity?

One tip is if the celebrity is already going to be in your area, that’s a good way to save money on travel because you don’t have to pay it. For example, many of the MTV Real World kids go around the country speaking at different colleges and like to pick up a nightclub appearance as well. So you can save money that way.

Or a musician who is already performing a concert on Thursday may want to pick up a nightclub appearance on Friday. Then you don’t have to pay for airfare, just an extra hotel room night. Now I don’t always know who is going to be on tour. People call me and ask if so and so is going to be in their area. I don’t know that, although I list the ones I do know about on my Web site at Esterman.com. If you know someone is going to be in your area, tell me. It’s up to you to let me know so I can help save you money on travel.

What are the steps someone would need to take to book a celebrity?

My Web site is basically a McDonald’s menu of who’s available. I can go after pretty much any celebrity and make them an offer, but the ones who are listed on my Web site are actively looking to book these types of engagements. It’s basically a three-step system: you choose a celebrity from my Web site, tell me how much you’re willing to spend, and email me some names. I make the offer to the celebrity, and if they’re available I draw up a contract and you put down a deposit. It’s that easy.

What does the business owner have to worry about at the time of the appearance?

Everything is laid out in the contract so there are no surprises. It’s a basic contract with a rider that spells out everything you need to know in advance.

What kinds of events for businesses will a celebrity do?

I booked Carmen Electra to work an electronic company’s trade show booth. Cindy Margolis hosted a Tupperware-like party where women came to buy purses. Jenna Jameson hosts nightclub parties for lingerie companies. The corporate market is huge, and everybody wants to get a celebrity. You can hire them for store openings and restaurant openings as well.

Can you also hire them for private parties, weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, etc.?

Sure. We do those all the time. I recently booked Mario Lopez to host a graduation party at someone’s home. They’ll do pretty much anything as long as you’re willing to pay for it.

Heather Thompson: Insider Interview

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

Contact Any Celebrity Member Heather Thompson from Tampa, Florida found that writing celebrities for free autographs and memorabilia is a great way to raise money for a nonprofit organization. We spoke with Heather about her cause and its successful campaign…

Tell us about the project you’re raising funds for.

I was and am attempting to contact celebrities for donations to the Susan G. Komen Foundation 3-Day Walk in Tampa, which raises money for breast cancer research.

What exactly were you looking for from the celebrities?

I requested autographs, memorabilia, sponsorships and financial donations. Basically, any and everything. Items were the real goal so we could auction them off for money.

How did you request these items?

I originally sent out 100 letters to celebrities and then an additional 200. The first 100 were the best responses from the celebrities. I chose the specific names because the Contact Any Celebrity database allows searches by cause, so I know if a star is interested in supporting my charity from the get-go.

What were the responses like?

Wow, well I sent out about 300, but this is where I want to point out that it takes work. To get a little, I had to do a lot. Out of the 300 letters I wrote I only got about 30 responses, and I only had five letters returned to me.

How did the celebrities and their representatives response?

It was honestly amazing. I was surprised at how personal the responses were. I got phone calls from assistants and personal letters of support from stars.

Who responded?

One of the best I got was from Cyndi Lauper. I got a phone call from her personal assistant and she said that Cyndi wanted to be a little more involved that just sending an autographed headshot. So we sent a 3-Day t-shirt to her and some other items, and she signed and sent them back along with some extra autographed headshots. I received an autographed headshot and personal letter of support from Al Roker. Judith Light sent a script from “Who’s the Boss” with her signature on it.

You really got some big names!

I know, but that’s not the end. Ryan Seacrest and Dustin Hoffman, to name just a couple, also sent autographed headshots. One of the biggest responses has been from the Tampa Bay Lightning, our NHL Hockey Team and the Stanley Cup Winner. We initially got a signed hockey puck. Then, through a connection, our request was noticed by a player who’s mother had recently dealt with breast cancer. We suddenly had promises for team autographed jerseys, hockey sticks and other pieces of memorabilia.

When is your auction?

The auction is actually August 26 at 6 p.m. We are having it at the James Joyce Pub in Ybor City-South Tampa. We also landed sponsorship of the auction from Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer.

Did you find it easier to get support and sponsorship when you had a few celebrity names behind your project?

Absolutely! It helped big time. Without the celebrity names we would have never been able to land a corporate sponsorship at all! And now, we’re getting local promotion and beer through Pabst. We also managed to get food. And the pub was donated by a wonderful local business person.

So what did you say in your letters to celebrities that was so effective?

In the first batch of letters I decided I needed to be as clear and to the point as possible. I kept it down to two paragraphs. First I said why I was writing and what the cause is that they would be supporting. I gave all of the who, what, when, where and why. I also set a deadline for contact and for items to be sent in. It makes it seem a little more urgent and important if there’s a specific date and specific information than not being specific.

Listing contact information was very important for me. In the letter I listed my phone number and my email–any way for them to get in touch with me. Later I learned that was a very smart thing to do. some of the representatives wanted to call and be sure I was legitimate and that I was really working to benefit a charity.

You said you sent out two letters. What was in the second one?

The second batch was the bigger one, and in this one I mentioned that I had already sent one request with no response and that I was extending the deadline. I also listed the support I had already received. It had the desired effect, and I got a second wave of responses and memorabilia.

You mentioned you used Contact Any Celebrity to get your information. What was so helpful about the service?

Well, Contact Any Celebrity was so much more than I expected. It’s more than just a listing of who and what. In other words, it’s not like just a “star map.” I felt that the contact information was valid and up-to-date, and there’s so much information in the database. Everyone I looked for was there. There were also so few returned letters from everyday household names. In this country we seem to value celebrity and fame so high. To get things we can place value on and auction off for a great cause is wonderful. It was great to actually get responses from stars. The service is priceless.
