Student loan giant Navient (formerly Sallie Mae) has a history of cheating students and taxpayers more than a decade long. For years, I’ve pushed Republicans AND Democrats at the Department of Education to hold Navient accountable, but the department basically told me that Navient is "Too Big to Fail." New evidence from a CFPB lawsuit shows that Navient officials knew the company was scamming students and didn't stop it. Senator Richard Blumenthal and I told
Secretary Betsy DeVos and the Department of Education that they have no excuse: they cannot throw more taxpayer money at Navient and renew their $200 million contract.
This is simple: if Navient knows that the Department of Education is too scared or captured to punish the company for cheating students, then guess what? It’s going to keep cheating students while Secretary DeVos blocks and tackles for them. It’s time to finally end this cycle and #FireNavient. ... See MoreSee Less
I agree. They changed rules and payments so often in my daughter’s loan - which was supposed to be paid off in 10 years, that 15 years later she still owed thousands. It is extremely difficult to trace. She went along paying faithfully for 10 years trusting they were honest
I went to charter college, They have since gone bankrupt! I contracted cancer while going to school. I was promised a job and they never helped at all. I am now on disability and cannot work. The interests rate are appalling. I had a private loan in which I paid off entirely. Due to chemo I can no longer type. It is impossible for me to get a job in business at the age of 67, without being able to type.
We have loans with Navient, that we'll be paying on forever. Thank you, Senator Warren! They need to be held accountable.
My problem with student loans are the interest rates. I had to take out a total of 7 loans to pay for my masters degree which cost me a total of $70k. It is extremely difficult to pay off loans that have a 6.8% interest rate, which according to the navient website “Interest rates on federal student loans are set by Congress.” I want to be a responsible borrower and pay back my debt, however, these interest rates are heavy. I would like to know why congress is setting such high interest rates on student loans. My mortgage loan is at a 4.25% which is far less than the 6.8% for a $20K federal student loan I took out back in 2012.
They are in Maui celebrating their 5 Billion profit from last year. Elizabeth, take them down! Their interest rates are unfair. They make it almost impossible to repay!
The moment I hear the words "too big to fail," I say take them down. Nothing should be permitted to be too big to fail. Size, heft, financial influence, no matter how overwhelming, should never be permitted to supersede right vs. wrong, or "trump" the welfare of American citizens.Oh, while we're at it, let's remove Betsy DeVos as well. She's no friend of the American citizen.
Thank you! We could also give you an earful about the incompetence of Fed Loan Services, who took over as our student loan servicer from Navient. It's amazing how bumbling they both are!
I've been steadily making my payments for four years and I currently owe 3000 more than when I started 😂
I heard that Betsy DeVos had a $$$$ interest in student loan debt collections. Is that true? I know her brother, Eric Prince owned Blackwater- private military. Creepy and opportunistic.
I still owe thousands on a loan for 1 semester at one of the Art Institutes (Ft. Lauderdale), through Navient. The school was so bad, that I dropped out after the first semester, and ended up owing thousands on top of hijacked interest rates (6.8% on 2 of them) that I’m still paying for 9+ years later - For one semester! Something has to be done with interest rates and these gimmick colleges. I can only imagine how much more difficult it is for those with higher debts and who went a full 2-4+ years. 😞#fireNavient
They purchased my debt from another bank, but did not let me know. They also imposed a higher interest rate. They bought my debt to make a bigger profit. Long story short, I recouped some of it from a class action lawsuit - I was not the only person put in that position. One thing is for sure: I will never use SallieMae by choice. Their business model is despicable.
Went to the instructional meetings when my kids were in school and they want you to bring your income taxes for like 4 years, your w-2s, how much money are you going to make this year, and on and on and the interest rates and pay back times etc. I had been saving for this day. I didn’t buy anything for years. Drove old cars and paid for both of my children to get their Bachelors Degrees. #gladididntgethungupwiththefanniemaecrap
Amen... Elizabeth Warren thank you for all your hard work with Navient and Sallie Mae. Lastly you have my vote for president 20/20 way to go Mrs.Warren.
Which is why we financed my son's college on our credit cards, lower interest rates and being paid off in real time.
How awful to learn that big pharma, banks, and the insurance businesses are "scamming" us with the assistance of our government!
I've been making payments for 20 years. The last couple of years I've been on an IBR that I'm supposed to renew once a year. Except they make you do it every 6 months. and if you miss their deadline?? double your payment! I tried to consolidate my loans years ago with the Dept of Education and they (at the time Sallie Mae) refused to sell my loan! Dept of Education stated they knew this wasn't allowed, but they weren't going to do anything about it. So even though I work for a public archive, I don't qualify for loan forgiveness. #FireNavient!!!!
Help. I'm a student with loans through navient/Sallie mae. I'm really frightened.
Warren cleaned up after Bush deregulation caused the mortgage crisis, she’s created the consumer protection system and I want her knowledge of law and economics to get us straight after the Orange administration is in jail. 🇺🇸💙🇺🇸
Navient is evil and so is the entire student loan system. You can’t even get out of loans under bankruptcy or three years of disability! Taxpayer-funded education is the only system that works
Navient just picking up Salie Mae's scams. I was able to get one of my loans from them dismissed because of the fraudulent school. Working on the rest now.
They bribed us so we felt we wanted to continue getting that money and we renewed their contract...there, I fixed it
I applaud your tireless efforts on behalf of students and consumers. You rock!
Oh! It all makes so much sense now! You see, they'd have to work if they changed contractors. 24 million clients, that's a lot of work. Who could expect people to do work on their work time. Don't be ridiculous. 🙄
thank you Elizabeth Warren for speaking up. Hopefully when you are elected President we will have a new secretary of education - possibly someone with actual teaching experience!
I had to harass them to give us a payoff statement so we could refinance with another bank. I assume Ms Devos has ownership of them?
More than half of hourly workers get their work schedules with less than a week’s notice, making it tough to go to school, keep child care, and pay the bills. I’m reintroducing the Schedules That Work Act with Rosa DeLauro for some economic security for working families. It would set some ground rules for workers’ schedules: workers should get their schedule 2 weeks in advance. No retaliation against workers who ask for schedule changes. And workers have a right to rest between shifts.
Workers of color – especially women – are more likely to have unpredictable work schedules, face cancelled shifts, work consecutive closing and opening shifts, and be part-time workers. Schedules That Work is about basic dignity and fairness for all workers. ... See MoreSee Less
Hope this passes.... As a Registered Nurse for over 40 years, raising two boys, I have experienced these inequalities...
I get my schedule on a Thursday afternoon. It starts the next day, and only until the next Thursday. It makes childcare a nightmare, especially for certain hours every other Saturday. I wish it were every 2 weeks so that I could plan doctor's appointments and such in advance.
Thank you for raising the issue- it is tremendously unfair to workers and their families
I've worked at a couple places that the schedules came out just hours before closing the day before the schedule starts. I was lucky I didn't have child care issues. But it was difficult to schedule any other part of my life. I felt for the single parents trying to support their families. Because, minimum wage is not enough for someone to live on, trying to juggle 2 jobs where schedules are hard to predict.
When I was managing retail and fitness clubs the owners always wanted me to do weekly schedules and move people around each time. I never did. I found what shifts would work for which people had them come in to do those most of the time, and occasionally asked them to cover other people's or switch around just to get some variety. I always thought it was very unfair to come out with a schedule on Friday for the next week.
Fantastic. I couldn’t get a regular part time job during grad school for that very reason. Racked up way more in student loans & credit card debt because I had to choose between school & work.
As an hourly worker, I appreciate the thought, but at the same time, there are a lot of life events that come up unexpectedly where you have to ask for time off quickly. Most hourly workers have a “point scale” attendance policy, and when the schedule is made that far in advance, the pressure of trying to find a co-worker to sub for you while you’re constantly barfing into a toilet, so you don’t get a “point” can be overwhelming, especially if you wake up sick with no sick leave, and have to scramble to find someone to cover your shift yourself, or else you get a point because the people at work have to do it for you.
My daughter works for a day care for $8.00 an hour with no benefits. She waits until Sunday afternoons to get her schedule for the next week often to find she is not getting enough hours to pay her bills, or to find out someone called in sick so she is working 11 hours with minimal breaks. She loves kids and is so good at her job. I told her Elizabeth Warren wants to raise wages for child care workers, so she is now team Warren.
Thank you, this is so important for the millions who want to work but can only find employment with employees that use just in time scheduling.
Elizabeth Warren is, and sports a record of advocacy for the rights of the middle class , and the least fortunate among us.its a good fight and she has been consistant throughout her public career to protect the rights of what she calls the little guy.thsnk you Elizabeth for all you do you have my vote.
"More than half of hourly workers get their work schedules with less than a week’s notice..." Where does she come up with that statistic? The bulk of hourly jobs I have had during my 50 years of being in the work force had very rigid schedules. The same hours on the same days week after week after week. I worked in manufacturing, hospitality, construction, and customer service. Rarely were there schedule changes unless to meet either special customer demands - hospitality to meet conventions and special events schedules, or other workers needing time off for some special purpose, or manufacturing and construction had unexpected overtime to meet special customer needs or get caught up with lost time due to inclement weather. What about the employers who have to manage their work force to meet changing customer demands? What Warren proposes is going to hamstring business efficiency and reduce profits. This woman is far out of touch with the realities of life and commerce.
I work several jobs with varied hours and missed out on alot of my children and grandchildren's activities. If I didn't need a roof over my head I wouldn't have work two jobs every week, for 10 years.
This is a great idea. I thought part-time would work best for my family, but due to the added expenses, there was less fluctuation working full-time.
So spot on!!! Thank you. I here from my residents at Caritas Communities that they can’t work two jobs or even book a doctors appointment because of this. Just make the schedules standard.
My retail job posts the schedule on Thursdays for not the next Sunday but one after that (10 days later). We post signs reminding the team of the deadline for their time off requests that gets updated every week. If something come up after the deadline and you can’t work a scheduled shift, you post it on the swap shift board and see if someone can take it. Most times, a swap is done and your attendance is never impacted. The systems works well.
I can relate! Working @ a grocery store as a single mom & a newborn baby & working different shifts everyday. You had to go with private babysitting as there were NO childcare facilities open after 6pm. Not getting your schedule either before Friday for the following week. Super hard for women with children!
So true! And especially for workers that have to make ends meet by working 2 jobs how can they do that!
This is huge! Thank you.
This is so true. It's impossible to plan anything or even have a 2nd job to make up for the short-hours they give you. They promise you hours, then take them away & give them to someone else. They change the schedule & fail to let you know so then they can fire you for "no show" when the last time you checked the schedule you weren't scheduled for that day. *SH* I like this idea...at least from the viewpoint of the employee.
Thank you Senator! Some people tell you to go to school to improve your lot, but how can you if you don't know your schedule week to week? Also many people used to hold multiple jobs to make their ends meet, or to pay for a house, or to pay for theirs and their kids education. How can you work two jobs if your schedules at both change on a whim?
For 33 years I worked in Human Resources for one of the nation’s largest retailers. I did not make the rules, but it was my job to enforce them, including the scheduling of our largely-part time workforce. The situations Senator Warren describes were exactly what we had to deal with. And not only were workers expected to be available on short notice, six days a week, pay was minimum wage with absolutely no raises, even for the most productive workers, for the last few years before I retired. It was incredibly unfair. I heartily support Senator Warren’s proposed law.
Good to be in a union. Schedules are posted 2 weeks in advance.
Applebee’s did this to me constantly. The work week started Monday and we would get the schedule the day before on Sunday. Time off requests were rarely honored. It was an awful mess. I had no social life. I lived and breathed that place because of the way they scheduled.
I love everything about Elizabeth except the Medicare for all. Wish she would keep Obamacare with some tweaks.
It will be SO amazing to have a President who actually wants the job! And cares enough to do the job. <3
Representative Elijah E. Cummings was a fearless leader for social, economic, and racial justice, a giant for the people of Baltimore, and my dear friend and longtime partner. Sending my love to his beloved wife Maya, his children, his incredible staff, and everyone mourning the loss of our champion. Whenever anyone would ask him why we should keep fighting, even when the odds were against us, he’d always say: “We don’t have the right to be silent.” We honor his memory by staying in the fight and keeping his hope alive. Rest in power, Elijah. ... See MoreSee Less

I love watching this video over and over again. To feel this kind of acceptance, love, joy and support from an elected official is so incredibly powerful. Your compassion and ferocity in terms of protecting us is palpable and genuine. Thank you. #mypresident
Sad that we need a "coming" out day to begin with. We need a respect all people's day. Why can't each of us be who we are and be respected. Everyone deserves equal opportunity.
Thank you for your support! Great Town Hall last night!
Thank you Senator. Means a lot to have you share that perspective to so many people from all walks of life here in the U.S.
